Soft springtime grass under your feet and brisk breezes mean that kite season is here. This Sunday, the 14th edition of the Strawberry Fields Kite Festival takes off from the grounds of the Regional Mental Health Centre in St. Thomas. The location is billed as the largest and best kite-flying field in Southwestern Ontario, a region filled with wide-open spaces. Enthusiasts from all over Ontario and Michigan will fill the sky with kites and wind toys of all shapes and sizes. The must-see events include the "mass ascension" of kites at 1 p.m. and the battles of Rokkaku (traditional Japenese fighting kites) at 2 p.m.
When: Sunday, May 28. Rain date is Sunday, June 4.
Where: South Lawn, Regional Mental Health Centre, Sunset Drive, St. Thomas. Two hours from Toronto by car.
