May 30 will mark the 19th anniversary of the Strawberry Fields Kite Festival. For almost two decades now, the staff and clients of Regional Mental Health Care St. Thomas have welcomed the surrounding community to join them in flying kites on the south lawn of the facility. The kite festival has become a local tradition, with activities for children and strawberry ice cream sundaes for everyone. Bring the kids, the kites and the lawn chairs for an afternoon of fun and relaxation in the spring sunshine. Kite flyers from clubs all across southern Ontario and northern New York State bring their huge elaborate kites, including inflatable kites that measure up to 50 feet long! Families and kids bring everything from inexpensive store bought kites to handmade kites to heritage kites from homelands far from Canada. The field is a mix of sizes, shapes and colours as 300 to 500 kites fill the air and on the ground, there are banners, flags and “line laundry” to see close up. Everyone is welcome to come out on Sunday May 30, 2010 and join us flying from noon to 5:00 pm. Bring your own kite or just sit back and watch the show, either way it’s a great way to spend the day.
